I love drinking establishments. Whether you call it a pub, a bar, a lounge or a cafe, the places where people gather to drink have a special aura. The best are steeped in history and bursting with the stories of their previous inhabitants, mutely begging you to sit, tipple, ponder the past, and add to their pantheon of viviality.
While others may find the soul of a place by visiting its churches, its parks, or it’s markets, I head straight to its watering holes. There is no better way to become an instant resident of Anywhere than to park yourself on a stool, prop your elbows on the bar, and listen.
Each establishment featured in this blog was a stop on my life-long journey of pub discovery. As bars – especially ones with character and resonance – are increasingly falling victim to changing times and mores, some listed here may no longer be in operation. Sniffle. Sigh.
Great idea for a blog. I too love watering holes and agree that they are the best places to meet all kinds of interesting folk and gain some unique local insight.
Best of luck with the blog! I look forward to following it.
